Windy Winter Kayak Fishing with Capt. Steve Utley

I think it is safe to say that winter is finally here. The fronts are more frequent and the winds produced by the fronts can really make things rough out there whether you’re in a kayak or not. Please watch the weather reports and let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back. Being safe on the water makes things a lot more enjoyable for you and your families.

We have been fishing the Shamrock area behind Mustang Island and using the spoil islands to stay out of the wind which makes it comfortable and very productive. Fishing the edges of channels has been working well especially where the flats drain off into them. These drain-off areas are a bait freeway and the traffic is controlled by tide, temperature, and wind. There have been solid numbers of trout and redfish caught by fishing these edges and drop-offs. The lure of choice has been the Brown Lures Sea Devils and Devil Eyes in bone/chartreuse tail.

I’ve been rigging the lures on 1/16 or 1/8oz jig heads. Cast them and let them go all the way to the bottom before you start your retrieve, and be sure to slow it down a bit. The bite has been very subtle so you’ll need to feel for it. Also, the reds have been moving up in the 3′-4′ depths of these freeways as the day warms up. Sea Devils in black /chartreuse tail rigged weedless on 1/16oz jig heads casting to the spoil islands are bringing in solid slot redfish.

Be friendly and courteous on and off the water and please take more trash than you bring. We are the stewards of this planet and it is up to us to keep it clean.
