Capt. Ruben Garza - Team 4-Play -
Team 4-Play consists of Erika Carpio, Sandra Garza, Paul Messing, Capt. Ruben Garza, and alternate Bernie Carpio MD. The girls had been pre-fishing for the tournament in Corpus Christi since the first weekend in February so when tourney time came we would be prepared for the event. Friday’s pre-fishing was tough due to a small front coming through. We kept on driving from spot to spot and finally we picked one. I get out of the truck and went on a small wade with no luck and not one bite. I headed back the truck to leave, and that’s when it happened. The weather broke so we unloaded our kayaks and headed out. What a day! Erika got into some tailing redfish and Sandra and I caught several reds and trout. The good thing is that one of the trout I caught was 25” plus and solid. This was the spot no doubt so the next day (tournament day) we headed out and split up. Sandra and Erika paddled to the area where the reds were tailing while Paul and I paddled to where we had caught trout. The day before I had caught all of my trout on Dark Strawberry Blue Sea Devils, so we continued to use these to catch our fish. If Paul and I were fishing for limits, let me tell you we would have been done in about an hour. We caught so many trout we lost count, but they had no size to them. We moved on to look for some reds so maybe, just maybe we’d luck out. NOT!!! Biggest red was not even 20 inches. Good thing the girls went to a different direction. Earlier in the morning Paul and I got a call from the girls that there was no bait and nothing was biting. Not encouraging news from them, but a couple of hours go by and no call from them. I couldn’t take it anymore so I broke down and called them. Erika picked up a 26 trout using the same Sea Devils and Sandra had a 23 1/4 using the Black Cat colored Sea Devils. The reds were smaller than the trout, but the trout were big enough to place.

Erika’s speckled trout was good enough for 1st place and Sandra’s trout placed 2nd. I ended up placing 7th in largest stringer and Paul took 10th largest stringer. Overall our team placed 2nd in the team standings. The next tournament is in Port Isabel TX on April 19th.
