Designing a new fishing lure

With the Flappin' Devil coming out soon we wanted to share with you a little bit of how we create a new lure from scratch. This is one of the things we get asked about the most whenever we meet people, so hopefully it will answer a few of your questions.

I think that most people don't realize just how much time, effort and energy goes into creating a new fishing lure. For each lure that hits the shelves, we have probably gone through a dozen or more prototypes and variations to get everything just right. There is a considerable cost to create production molds like those shown in the video so it's very important to us to work out as many flaws as possible in the early design stages--and it's also why we get so irritated when someone comes along and copies a finished product of ours.

The video is a great example of this because most of the components shown are from the SOLO lure we released a while back. The SOLO went through about a year of testing and gathering feedback, trying to make sure techniques that work for bass fishing lures will still hold up in saltwater and won't get torn apart by redfish and speckled trout. Even after all that many people didn't like the size of the lure or the width of the hook gap...so it goes back to the drawing board where we can revise it more. This particular fishing lure is currently on version 4 and hopefully will be re-released this year.

We really wanted to do this video so that you could see what goes into the development process, and to share some "behind the scenes" info that rarely gets published. Some companies want to be completely walled off and not let you see anything, but you all are such an important part of our process that it only seems natural to share what happens to your ideas--because that's where the truly great ideas usually come from.

I hope you enjoy the video, and if so please leave us some feedback here. We really enjoyed doing this and would like to show more if you are interested.
