Mark Owens - Austin Kayak Bass Fishing Tournament
On February 23rd the Austin Kayak Bass Fishing Tournament was held at Walter E. Long Lake (aka Lake Decker) up in Austin. The tournament started at 7:30 in the morning for a day that proved to be challenging. Early morning brought some calm conditions with great clarity along with a nice amount of cover. Places to hit were the reeds and grass beds in this lake. Most anglers brought in their catches early as it seemed to calm down as the day grew. Amber colored Sea Devils netted me three bass for the day, but around 11 the winds picked up. We battled strong winds and waves on our quest for the big one. Weigh-in came soon enough at 3, and the largest bass caught was 20”. Though most anglers caught bass in the 15”-17.5” range it all came down to location in the end.
